Weather depends on altitude
Uttarakhand rises from warm river valleys at a few hundred metres to Himalayan peaks above 7,000 metres, with Nanda Devi at 7,816 m. That means the season you choose matters less than where you go: a hill town can be pleasantly cool while the plains below are hot. Most visitors stay between 1,500 and 2,500 metres, where days are mild for much of the year.
Spring (March – April)
Spring is one of the loveliest times to visit. Days are bright and comfortable, nights are still crisp, and the hillsides turn red with blooming rhododendron (buransh), the state tree. It is an excellent time for walks, village visits and photography before the summer crowds arrive.
Summer (May – June)
Summer is peak season for Indian families escaping the heat of the plains, so popular hill towns get busy and prices rise. The Char Dham pilgrimage also opens in late April or May. If you travel now, book your stay and transport early, and choose quieter villages over the busiest towns.
Monsoon (July – mid-September)
The monsoon brings heavy rain, lush green valleys and very few tourists. It is also when landslides can close mountain roads for hours or days, so build in buffer days and keep plans flexible. The Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is at its best in July and August.
Autumn (late September – November)
For most travellers this is the best time to visit Uttarakhand. The rain clears the air, giving the sharpest views of the snow peaks all year, and the weather is dry and pleasant. Autumn also brings festivals such as Dussehra and Diwali.
Winter (December – February)
Winter days are often sunny and clear, but nights are cold, and higher places such as Auli and Chopta usually get snow. Auli becomes a ski destination in January and February. Pack warm layers and expect some high roads to close after heavy snowfall.
