Uttarakhand travel tips for foreign tourists

Visas, permits, money, SIM cards, clothing, food and safety — practical tips for international visitors planning a trip to Uttarakhand, India.

Visa and passport

Citizens of many countries can apply for an Indian e-Visa online before travelling; always use the official Government of India visa website. Carry your passport and visa with you throughout your trip, as hotels and homestays must see them at check-in.

Guest registration (Form C)

By Indian law, every place that hosts foreign nationals must register their stay with the authorities using Form C. This is routine — we handle it for you at check-in using your passport and visa details.

Permits for border areas

Some remote areas of Uttarakhand close to the international border require special permits for foreign nationals. If you plan a remote trek or drive near the border, check the rules in advance and arrange permits through a registered local agency.

Money and payments

Indians pay for almost everything by UPI (mobile payments), which usually needs an Indian bank account; some international visitors can use prepaid UPI wallets designed for travellers. Cards work in larger hotels and shops, but carry some cash, as ATMs can be scarce in remote valleys.

Phone and internet

You can buy a local SIM card at the airport or in town with your passport and a photo. Mobile coverage is good in towns but can be patchy deep in the mountains. Download offline maps before long drives.

What to wear

Pack layers: mountain mornings and evenings are cool even in summer, and cold in winter. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a rain jacket in the monsoon. At temples, dress modestly, cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes.

Food and water

Drink bottled or filtered water. Uttarakhand food is often vegetarian, and holy towns such as Rishikesh and Haridwar restrict meat and alcohol. Tell us about any dietary needs and we will cook accordingly.

Health and safety

If you plan high-altitude treks, acclimatise slowly and trek with a registered guide. Travel insurance that covers adventure activities is strongly recommended. Uttarakhand is generally a welcoming, safe place for travellers; use the same common sense you would anywhere.
