How to reach Uttarakhand from Delhi: flights, trains and road trips

A practical guide for international travellers getting from Delhi to Uttarakhand — flights to Dehradun, fast trains, private cars and buses, plus mountain road tips.

Start in Delhi

Most international travellers arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi (DEL). From there, Uttarakhand is close: the state capital Dehradun is roughly 250 km north, and the Kumaon hills around Nainital roughly 300 km to the north-east. You can fly, take a fast train or drive.

By air

Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED) has frequent direct flights from Delhi of about an hour, and connections from Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities. It serves Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Mussoorie. For the Kumaon region (Nainital, Almora, Ranikhet), Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is the closest. Flying is the fastest option if you are connecting straight from an international arrival.

By train

Fast day trains such as the Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi Express run from Delhi to Dehradun via Haridwar in around five to six hours, with comfortable air-conditioned seats and meals. For Nainital, take a train to Kathgodam. Foreign travellers can book on the IRCTC website or through a travel agent; trains fill quickly, so book as early as you can.

By road

Driving from Delhi takes roughly six to eight hours depending on your destination and traffic. We recommend hiring a car with an experienced local driver rather than self-driving: mountain roads are narrow and winding, and local drivers know them well. Government and private buses also leave from Delhi's ISBT Kashmere Gate for most towns in Uttarakhand.

Tips for mountain roads

Plan to arrive before dark, as hill roads are slower and harder to drive at night. If you get motion sickness, sit in front and carry medication. During the monsoon, allow extra time for possible landslide delays.
